Nutrition Therapy for Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are physical and mental illnesses that involve a preoccupation with food and weight. If you have an eating disorder, you’re not alone. Millions of people in the U.S. live with eating disorders, according to the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA).
Eating disorders include, but are not limited to, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, orthorexia and binge eating disorder. Eating disorders are often combined with other mental disorders, like depression and anxiety. Food may be used as a coping mechanism to deal with emotions, stress and even boredom. Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights.
About Nutrition Therapy
Nutrition therapy is a holistic approach to treating eating disorders. It involves individuals developing the tools to manage eating habits for the sake of improving their health. A registered dietitian explores what factors are contributing to a condition before establishing goals and offering advice. They will work with clients to create healthy meal plans and implement skills to develop healthy eating patterns. They will also teach you how to enjoy eating while addressing the medical and mental complications these conditions can cause. Nutritional therapy is a unique form of treatment that combines traditional nutrition and lifestyle counseling with the latest scientific research on eating disorders.
